Delicious Quotes

From anywhere! Books, movies, songs, T.V series, people. Let's share some quotes that are your favourites, and lines that really stand out to you. If you want, even give us a bit of a run-down as to WHY these are your favourite quotes, or WHY they stand out to you.

Some of mine:

'The fields are made of glass.'
This is a line from 'Love and Honour and Pity and Pride and Compassion and Sacrifice', by Nam Le. This is the first short story to appear in his collection 'The Boat'. I cannot explain exactly why this line stands out to me. It is repeated several times throughout the short story, and to me it created the most beautiful image of perfection ever.

"Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof."
This quote is one of many from my favourite movie 'V for Vendetta'. I love the utter power behind its meaning, the sheer truth in those last three words, and the intensity of the moment the line was delivered in. The masked vigilante who goes by the name of V had just been subject to a hail of gunfire, and his last standing opponent is in disbelief because he won't die. Read the quote one more time now that you have that knowledge. You see? Go and watch the movie and see it in full context, and then tell me what you think. Every line in that movie is worth quoting, but this one is by far the one that sticks out to me most.

"Life's a journey, not a destination."
I share this quote as a favourite with my dad (LOVE YOU DADDYKINS!), who intends to get it tattooed to himself some time in the near future. The quote is from the song 'Amazing' by Aerosmith, and I cannot describe to you how up-lifting the whole song is. I agree with this quote from the bottom of my heart, it's just so absolutely true and I love that Steve Tyler put it in his song. We aren't on this earth for the sake of it; we're supposed to do something while we're here. It's not just the waiting room between the womb and the grave.  It's a maze with many different possible ways to the end. I could go on for hours about what this quote means to me, but I'll leave it there.

Your turn: share some of your favourite quotes, tell me where they're from and why they stand out to you.

  1. "There is a peace that only comes from war" from the movie First Knight. It really shows the errors with our modern UN worldview that peace should be sought at all costs, no matter who it hurts in the process. I love your last quote, it reminds me of the song "believe" by Josh Groban, "every journey is but another beginning"

    1. Your First Knight quote reminds me of a quote by Gandhi:
"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." :)

I love the different things other things make people think of!

  2. Well, you already know this from my own blog last week or the week before: "Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth." Also from V (and I really liked the one you used today, too; I loved that the movie was so much about *ideas*).

Another one I always liked, from Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy: "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent." Sadly, for too many people, violence seems to be the first option.

Dumbledore had a ton of great quotes; here's one I really like: "it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be." And this one, too: "It is our choices...that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." Great man, Dumbledore.

And one more, from one of my favorite songs:
"I ain't often right but I've never been wrong/It seldom turns out the way it does in a song.
Once in a while you get shown the light/In the strangest of places if you look at it right."--Scarlet Begonias, by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia

    1. Now Dumbledore! Why didn't I think of any from him? I read the Harry Potter books that many times over... yet I haven't touched them in YEARS! :)

  3. I don't know the first two, though I enjoyed the backstories you included with them. The third one, though, I remind myself of all the time because, uh, I'm not very good at following it.

  4. "Remember the small things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things." - Robert Brault

    I really like that one.

    Lovely blog, btw.

    1. Aww that one is so sweet. And I agree with it; it's the little moments that make the biggest difference :)

  5. I really love V For Vendetta, it's a fantastic movie, and I imagine the graphic novel the film derives from are even better. I have a few favourite quotes.

I love this nihilistic soliloquy from Macbeth: 'Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more. It is a tale/ Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing'. That line just speaks to me.

In the film Remember Me, Robert Pattinson does this voice over, and the way he says it is indescribable. 'Ghandi said whatever you do in life will be insignificant. But it's important that you do it'.

Another quote I love is actually from a Japanese manga, Vampire Knight by Hino Matsuri: 'The next time you close your eyes, the whole world might have changed'.

There are too many others to name! Great post, Bonnee.

    1. I'm dying to get my hands on that graphic novel!

There are many quotes we could pull out of Shakespeare's work! And speak of the Devil! I just watched the Dr Who episode where they go back in time and meet Shakespeare!

I need to see Remember Me. I dislike Pattinson because of the Twilight movies, but I know I should still give his other movies a chance.

Once again, speak of the Devil. I just saw my second episode of Vampire Knight :p I'll have to read the manga some time.

:) Thanks for adding your quotes to the list!

  6. Here's one of my favorites...

From Stephen King's "On Writing" re. getting the first draft done quickly:

"I believe the first draft of a book — even a long one — should take no more than three months…Any longer and — for me, at least — the story begins to take on an odd foreign feel, like a dispatch from the Romanian Department of Public Affairs, or something broadcast on high-band shortwave duiring a period of severe sunspot activity."

PS... Bonnee, you earned an award from me... feel free to stop by whenever... it's part of the post dated June 13. :)

    1. An interesting quote... I cannot say I agree with it completely (it took me roughly a year to write Evergreen, though that included a lot of planning and plotting and idea-brewing before the actual writing began.). Nonetheless, thank you for sharing! :)

Ooh, award! :D I'll be right on over!

  7. Your quote from V for Vandetta is powerful and true. Human beings are mortal, while ideas are immortal. Googling for this quote I found a similar one by the French author Victor Hugo from 1851:

A stand can be made against invasion by an army; no stand can be made against invasion of an idea.

  8. Hi Bonnee! I found your blog through running4him and I thought it's so cool that you're the same age as me, and we both love writing!! I've started hundreds of novels, but never made as much progress as you...lol! I wish you the best with your writing!!! And oh I LOVE quotes...asking me to share a quote is like opening up Pandora's box! LOL! No really...let me share a few of my favorites...

A couple of them make me want to cry! Awww...

Life is not measured by the breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away...

Use your smile to change the world, but don't let the world change your smile!!!

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sail. Explore. Dream. Discover. --Mark Twain

If you live to be a hundred, I want to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.

And oh, hundreds more! But those are a few ones that I love...

    1. Nice of you to drop by and I hope by doing so you've been encouraged to pick up one of those unfinished novels and complete it! Or start a new one and stick with it :)

A Pandora's box of quotes is fine by me. Thanks for sharing these. The first and last one are amazingly sweet, and Mark Twain was a bit of a genius :)
