Writer's Update: Touched-Up Chapter 7

Progress is going slowly, but I just did a bit of editing on the 7th chapter of 'WALLS'. I know there are a few things that I'm going to need to go back to. I let the tension between Mildred and Kovax dissipate too quickly, so I need to pick it up again. I also need to go back and do worldbuilding, but I've decided that stuff can wait until another round of edits, because it's a little too overwhelming to juggle with improving everything else too. I'll dedicate a whole round of edits to worldbuilding some time later in the year. Hopefully I'll get around to it before NaNoWriMo 2014.

In other news, I had another training session at the library to prepare me for working there during the year. The job starts in just over a week and I am so excited! I move back to res on Monday, so I'm going to take some time to go to the library before I start working and familiarize myself with where things are. I get to give tours during orientation week, so I need to have a bit of a better idea of my way around. They gave us our uniforms! We have cool red shirts with "I'm here to help" written on the back of them, and the Deakin logo on the front. I feel so professional and awesome when I wear it. *squee!*

Thanks to the train ride up and back from Melbourne, I'm not 650 pages into A Clash of Kings and aiming to finish it hopefully before I move to res on Monday. That's totally doable! I am really looking forward to moving to res, and now I can add the reason that there is much nicer air there than there is in my hometown, because that stupid coal mine is still on fire and smoke and carbon monoxide levels have been a bit dodgy  lately...

What have all of you been up to? How have your writerly endeavours been going?

  1. Sorry, I hear 'red shirts' and I can't help but think of the poor, sacrificial lambs on the original Star Trek....

I guess school's starting up pretty soon--enjoy the remainder of your break. Have they figured out how they're going to put that coal mine out, or is it pretty much being contained and left to burn out on its own? Writing is porceeding--there is progress being made. Seems like you've got a pretty sensible approach to your work on WALLS--good luck!

    1. LOL! They call us the 'red shirts' for short anyway :p Maybe that's what will happen to me at the end of the year, once I've finished serving my purpose...

The last I heard about the coal mine fire was to flood it. The fire is actually still out of control, though it's staying in the mine at least. Not entirely sure what they're going to do, but we've been told it should be dealt with in the next two weeks.

I'm very excited to be going back to uni. Keep writing and thank you for visiting! :)

  2. It's kind of funny (in a disastrous sort of way) that Mr. JeffO mentioned "red shirts" and those coal mines in the same comment. My father has been a coal miner for the last four years, and during his first year he had to wear a red helmet to signify his low experience (as do all the under-yearlings). Anyway, I've been keeping myself busy watching lots of Jeopardy and even more Boy Meets World. I have to admit that the latter is one of the greatest television programs to have ever aired.

    1. I guess the colour red is the universally accepted colour for danger, stop, and look out, and in something like a coal mine, it would make sense that you'd have to look out for the inexperienced ones like that. I remember watching a few episodes of Jeopardy as a kid. I have not heard of Boy Meets World, though. Thanks for visiting, Patrick :)

  3. Isn't it crazy how many rounds of edits we need for most books? Sometimes I wish it would be a faster process, especially at the beginning when it seems overwhelming, but when it comes time to actually dive into the revisions it (usually) ends up being such a rewarding process. It sounds like you're making great progress with WALLS!

The library job sounds awesome. What better place to work, right? :)

    1. I have to keep reminding myself that the process needs to be taken in baby steps and with great patience.

I think the library is the perfect place to end up working. Thanks for visiting, Shari :)

  4. I share the feelings about the last comment about the many rounds of revisions needed before a book is ready. It's like a never ending story. Good luck in doing the best that you can with WALLS. It's nice that you have a job in the library waiting for you, and hopefully they will let you keep the cool red shirts when the orientation is over. Here in Canada everyone is watching the winter Olympics and we have snow on the ground. For a moment I didn't recognize that it's you, because of the new picture, which also is nice. Welcome again to the University next week.

    1. Sometimes it feels like going around in circles, but I know it will be for the best in the end. We get to keep the red shirts, they will be our uniforms all year. I've hardly paid any attention to the Olympics, though figure skating looks so good. Stay warm! And thanks, I cut my hair short a few months ago :p I'm sure I'll have plenty to blog about once I'm back at uni. Thanks for visiting, Giora :)

  5. I'm impressed you can insert worldbuilding in a pass. I have to do it as I write the first draft. I need that solid anchor first.

    1. I would have liked to have had that solid anchor first, but between the NaNo deadlines and general lack of planning, I got caught up in other things, and I guess inserting in a pass will just have to do :p Thanks for visiting, Lynda! :)
