NaNoWriMo 2013

It's been a busy week and weekend for me! Last Monday (21st), I sat my philosophy exam, which I've achieved 83% for, so I'm happy. Then it was time to celebrate a friend's birthday on Thursday, and then on Friday, Deakin University residents celebrated the final night of res. That was a good night and included having goon poured over us, sharing a shower with three of my housemates (wearing clothes, I promise!), getting muddy in a mud-pit/mud-slide, and consuming many alcoholic beverages. My dad helped me move out and back to my hometown on Saturday, and on Sunday I caught the train back up to Melbourne so that I wouldn't have to travel the whole 3.5 hours on Monday morning to be at the university for job training at 9AM. After job training, I started the trek back to my hometown and made it in time for dinner. I've spent today (Tuesday in Australia) starting to unpack my stuff and tidy my room. Progress has been slow.

I'm home and free of study until late February/early March next year! As I mentioned in my last post, I want to participate in NaNoWriMo 2013. After a lot of consideration, I've decided that due to the fact that my writing style has changed significantly since I started writing WALLS at the start of this year thanks to my university studies, although I haven't finished a draft yet, I am going to re-write it from the start this November. A part of me is mad at myself for making this decision, because it wasn't until I'd decided to do it that I realised the half-written first draft that I'm scrapping was already just under 25,000 words. However, I'd rather the first full draft be all in one style and up to the same standard so that it'll be easier to revise later. Also, I've forgotten most of what I've already written and I want to change a few things, so I'd have to read over it all again anyway.

The good thing about making this decision is that I've already got most of a plan already written, because I certainly haven't had time to plan anything else, and I like being organised.

How are everybody else's NaNoWriMo/NaNoRevisMo plans going? If you're registered on the NaNoWriMo website, be my buddy!

  1. Yay, I'm looking forward to hearing about your NaNo experience! Who knows, maybe it'll be fun to re-write WALLS -- it's gotta be interesting to go into a project already knowing how a good portion of it will play out. I don't do NaNo, but I AM starting to plan out a new book this week and am excited about that! :)

    1. I have missed writing WALLS so I'm very excited to be diving back into it and getting to know my characters again. I hope your story planning goes well, Shari! I hope you'll share your progress with us too. Thanks for visiting.

  2. Sounds like a wild time, and a much-needed 'blow off steam' sort of weekend. My daughter's college basically tells them they must be gone within 24 hours of their last final--they don't want kids hanging around with nothing to do (at least in the US, this is not necessarily a bad idea).

I think your choice is the right one. You'll likely keep enough of what attracted you to the idea of WALLS in the first place that it won't be like a whole new thing, but you'll end up with something much more in keeping with who you are. I'm still registered at NaNo, so maybe I'll see you around there. Good luck!

    1. Oh I'm glad we got to hang around for one last celebration together, but I suppose the legal drinking age in the US is 21, isn't it? It's 18 here, so I guess there's less of a chance of laws being broken.

I've had all year to plan more of the story in my head, particularly how it will all end. So I'm very excited to see where my first NaNoWriMo experience takes me and my story. Thanks for visiting, JeffO!

    2. Yes on the drinking age. Technically, it's decided on a state level, but back in the 80s the US government put pressure on the states to raise the age to 21. It didn't stop us from drinking a whole lot, it just changed where we could do it.

  3. Enjoy your summer vacation (here we are heading into cold winter) and good luck with NaNo. I guess you've learned so much about creative writing in your first year that it's good to implement what you've learned while rewriting WALLS. There was a book event here with Roger Dufau, an author who used to live for many years in Hobart, Tasmania, running a restaurant there. We talked about the Wombats and he said that some people in Australia eat their meat and the same goes for Kangaroos. I was surprised and when I Googled for this, I couldn't confirm it. Hence, I wonder if they serve Wombat's meat in some restaurants in Australia, or if it's very rare. Bets wishes, Bonnee, in starting NaNo tomorrow.

    1. Now you know how I feel every time the rest of you are heading into glorious summer and I'm going towards winter... haha :)

I can't say I know of wombat, though I wouldn't be surprised. I have known of crocodile being served, though that was at a food festival and I've never seen it in a restaurant. I can definitely tell you that eating kangaroo is a thing. A couple of weeks ago, I brought 'kanga bangas' from the super market, because I wanted to girl from California who'd lived on res with me for the trimester to try kangaroo before she left.

Thanks for visiting, Giora :) It's only 1 hour until NaNo starts in my timezone.

  4. Actually, that's a great way to get back into the flow of your story. I think sometimes my consistency is off because it takes me so long to write a full novel. I started this current WIP two years ago, and I have pages and pages of revision notes for when I go back through it when I'm done. And I know I'm going to have to rewrite the opening. That has to be the strongest part of any story, so I think you're wise to do a rewrite if you think it's not up to your current standards. Good luck!

    1. I plan to rewrite KATHERINE and eventually my first manuscript EVERGREEN in order to get them up to standard, now that I know I am at a standard that's good enough to have had a couple of little things published. NaNo has been going for 11 hours now in my timezone and I'm already much more pleased with the 2000 words of WALLS I've written. Thanks for visiting :D
