Writer's Update: WALLS

(Not the original by Pink Floyd, but a cover which I prefer by Korn.)

My Writing Craft lecturer was sick this week so I don't have any notes to share with you at the moment. I'm eagerly awaiting the lecture slides to be available online, or for the recording of the lecture from another campus to be put up. I was very sad not to have that lecture.

After I got back to my room from the tutorial and watched an episode of Game of Thrones (oh my goodness, this is seriously the most amazing T.V show ever!) I was overcome by the urge to write. I'd tried writing during the cancelled lecture while I was hanging around campus with some of my Writing Craft friends who hadn't gotten the memo before we'd arrived, but it didn't come out the way I wanted it to.

So I sat down when I got back into my room, turned on my laptop, thought for a moment and opened up the file containing the first three chapters of WALLS, which I started planning and writing months ago. I haven't added to WALLS since around January/February if I remember rightly. So I read over the first three chapters, opened up the planning document and cranked out the fourth chapter.

It felt so good to be writing again! Like, for my own purpose instead of for an assessment. It felt good to be working on my W.I.P again. What made it even better was that I noticed myself applying (or at least trying to apply) what I've learned in my Writing Craft classes... and I think my philosophy brain must have found its way in there too because I found myself thinking, writing and talking deeper than I usually do, without sounding melodramatic and cheesy. I hope it wasn't melodramatic and cheesy anyway.

2,499 words up! I'm pleased with this progress and hoping to get more done soon.

What are you in the blogosphere doing? How is your writing?

- Bonnee.

  1. wow sounds excellent!!! Its such a cool feeling when you can get deeper and in a way more intimate with yourself in your writing... The song was interesting too!
Mostly I have been doing some short story writing, planning for the future of a futuristic His-Novel, and doing an extensive review of a fellow writer's book draft.

    1. I love discovering new things about myself as I develop as a writer. I love seeing when others do it too.

What is a His-Novel? Does that simply mean that it's aimed at guys? I haven't heard the term before, now I'm interested :) Good luck with the planning by any means and it's great that you are helping out a writer-friend.

No, haha it's a type of historical fiction but more of a YA or often sci-fi approach. It might more a Northeastern thing, I'm not sure =)

    3. Ooh sounds interesting :) I haven't heard of it before, like I said, but definitely something I'll keep an eye out for.

  2. Wow, Bonnee, that's great! It would be really interesting to look at the differences in your writing pre-class and post-class.

As for me, I'm spinning a bit. I have a project I haven't done anything with in a while, but it hasn't taken off yet. Of course, I have to work on it for that to happen.

    1. My aim in this university degree is to become the best writer I can be, so I hope to see a great deal of improvement when I compare the before to the after.

Some projects just need a little bit of time to simmer on the back burner before they spring to life. When you think it's simmered long enough, just go for it.

    2. What I typically find is that something comes along and makes the project go from a wimpy little simmer to an instantaneous, explosive boil.

      I love when that happens.

  3. Yay! Isn't it the best feeling to dive back into writing after some time away? It's like coming home again! :)

  4. Glad your writing again on something other than class work. I've missed reading your blog and conversing with you over the last six months. But I'm back. I hope you'll visit again and leave me a line or two. I'm about a third of the way through my third novel and that is such a good feeling. Keep working on WALLS.

    1. I actually got stupidly excited when I saw your name in my inbox! I've definitely missed having your input and seeing what you've shared on your own blog. I'll definitely pop over. Keep writing and thanks as always for your support! Glad to have you back :)

  5. Nice that you are writing again. GAMES OF THRONES is very popular here, but I only saw one episode so far. It's based on the book A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE by R.R Martins. About two years ago he visited the book store close to me and there was a long long line of people, mostly younger, waiting to meet him and have him sign their books. I didn't heard about him so was surprised to see so many people. He gave a small talk and was very friendly. I'm very impressed by author like him who can write an epic story like GAMES OF THRONES. So many characters, so many subplots. I can't do it. Well, let us dream that maybe one day your WALLS will inspire a TV show. Best wishes for your lecturer to get well and be in the next class.

    1. Game of Thrones is definitely the most popular series among my friends at the moment. The girl living next door to me on res is reading the books and I would too if I had the time. It really is such an epic story, so many characters and subplots it's amazing. I can only HOPE that I will one day write something as awesome...

I guess most people only hear about the books once the movie is about to come out... that was me for The Hunger Games and Harry Potter. But so cool that you got to see him, even if you hadn't heard of him at the time.

Thanks for stopping by, as always :)

  6. I found the book event in my building's bookstore. Put on YouTube "George R.R. Martin Visits Indigo" and watch a clip from the event I attended.
